An accessible way to read RNIB Talking Books on your smart phone or tablet
EasyReader is a reading app produced by Dolphin. It runs on both Apple and Android devices. It provides an accessible and powerful accessible interface to RNIB Reading Services.
EasyReader is available to download from both the Apple app store and the Google Play Store.
EasyReader makes finding, downloading and listening to books simple and easy to use. As an example, when searching you will see the name of the book and a download link.
EasyReader is free to download. To use EasyReader you need to create a Dolphin account. You can do this with an email address and password or by using an existing Google account log in details.
EasyReader is then free to use but there may be charge for services you wish to access through EasyReader, for example RNIB Newsagent.
EasyReader provides access to a number of reading services around the world. In the UK you can access RNIB Reading Services, RNIB Bookshare for accessible curriculum materials, Project Gutenberg and Bookshare International. Apart from Project Gutenberg, you need account details to log into these reading services.
Once you have set up the Dolphin account, you choose RNIB Reading Services from the list of libraries in the Manage Libraries section. In this section you can also block libraries from showing up in future sessions. Press the manage libraries button. By checking and unchecking boxes next to each library you can hide them from your library list.
You can search by title or author or browse by most popular or recently added.
From the Manage Libraries screen, choose RNIB Reading Services.
A list of options appears including a search box, checkouts, search by recently added and most popular.
Once you have completed a search, a list of books appears. Each book has the name of the book and author and a more info button. The book title does not say link or button but can be activated by selecting the book title.
Books can be played either from the My books option or from the checkouts screen. Press on the name of the book and choose open from the subsequent screen.
When you download a book, the option to open it is on the subsequent screen. Your device will bleep when a book is downloaded and you will be on the screen where you can open the book.
The My books option shows books, newspapers and magazines you have downloaded from all your libraries. Choosing the title will open it directly.
Once opened you can navigate by small increments or move through sections. You can set bookmarks, sleep timer and audio playback speed.
When you open a book, find and press play. Your playback speed is remembered across titles.
EasyReader works very well with Voiceover and Talkback. You can use Voiceover and Talkback gestures to find and activate options.
